about

Our Smallest Tile Butieque

TERRA DESiGN is the brainchild of Susan Fila-van Dijk, who has provided unique and handcrafted items from her showroom in Venlo since 1995.

She has delighted in providing her clients with beautiful ceramics created by local artists.

In 2007, she enrolled in a pottery course but was disappointed to find it focused on sculpting without a spinning potter’s wheel. Out of creative curiosity and trying to make the best out of things, she tried something new and so made her first tile in a workshop in Tegelen, a small Dutch town whose name actually means "Tiles" in English.

Susan was inspired by her mentor, Yvonne Z. and went on to study for four wonderful years in Nederweert, in the classes of ceramic artist Martin S. This year she was privileged op attend a two-day course in the famous Raku atelier by the beloved Ine and Ed K., and she is going back for more.

She started her own design studio in 2008, after a nice shop owner found her tile very beautiful and different. This happened in Deurne, at a fireplace dealer.

Susan has always had a strong sense of design, beginning with her early years studying Art History. She truly enjoys working collaboratively, to help you liberate your own design concepts with our assistance. We offer a wide array of colors and materials, and our own big ceramic oven and a small test oven where we test our clay and glazes. The art of spinning pottery is something we love and appreciate.

You are welcome to come try and experience it for yourself at our workshop in Tegelen.

We believe in being ecologically friendly, with a good waste management policy. We find a way to re-use our left over materials. For example if a glaze didn't come out quite right, we smash the tile (gently) with a hammer and turn it into a lovely piece of mosaic or an interior mural. Because we are a small scale manufacturer, we are able to responsibly manage our company and we ask that you understand and support this. This means there will be a short period of time before receiving your order, as each is hand-crafted.
